While I was online on Facebook, I saw a photo of a very beautiful cake posted by my friend and former partner in Xavier School Greenhills, Teacher Jan Barlin. She was thanking DoughMestic PH for making such a nice cake for her husband. I immediately went to the Facebook page of DoughMestic PH and learned that it was our friend and former colleague, Teacher Joey Bautista-Dyhianto who baked the cake!
Honestly, kinilig talaga ako! I browsed all her "botanicakes" and mapapa-wow ka talaga sa sobrang gaganda ng creations niya! It was the very first time that I saw such lovely and intricately designed cakes especially that they looked like bouquets of flowers! Alam ninyo naman ako, #ihavethisthingwithflowers ang peg!
I haven't seen Teacher Joey for more than a decade. We just see each other on Facebook.
I immediately sent her a private message and asked her if she could share to me her story. She was as accommodating as always. She responded with very detailed "chika" of the humble beginings of DoughMestic PH and why she chose to establish it as her business.
Teacher Joey retired from Xavier School in 2012 after 10 years of service primarily because she and her husband were trying to have a baby. She gave birth to their son in 2014. She and her husband agreed that she would be hands-on with their baby so they didn't opt to get a nanny. Her mom helped them and took care of her as well as she recovered from Cesarean Birth.
Since then she still is a stay-at-home mom and breastfeeding her son who's almost two years old now.
She was used to working so it was quite an adjustment to just be at home and she wanted to do something else while taking care of her son. This was the time that she realized that it wasn't easy to be a housewife. People would think that it would be so easy since she was staying at home. But essentially being a SAHM could be a round-the-clock job. Most of the time it was exhausting because breastfeeding was round the clock too.

So she kept thinking of something she could do. She just tried out baking. She used to bake while growing up as a hobby. She usually baked cookies and brownies and dabbled into buttercream. She found fondant too tedious and a little challenging. At first she experimented. Then she took a one day class as introduction to buttercream flowers. She loved the aesthetic of it so she kept on practicing.
Staying at home gave her time to bake again. She baked for her family a lot--- pandesal, donuts, beignets (french donuts), loaves, muffins, and of course, cakes! She was not very active then on Facebook. But her husband was posting pictures of the stuff she made for him. Then friends and family were egging her on to sell her cakes. So finally, on January this year, she launched DoughMestic PH! She started taking orders. On March 2016, she took a short course with one of Korea's premiere buttercream flower artists. From that class, she learned new techniques that added to her repertoire.
"I like creating with my hands and piping the flowers relaxes me and gives me a channel for expressing my creativity. You know how some teachers find it therapeutic to be cutting loads and loads of materials for her students, gano'n 'yong feeling ko din when I'm thinking of putting together a cake. Each flower is made by piping each and every petal. So labor of love din siya. I'm passionate about my cakes just like I was with teaching my students," says Teacher Joey.
Teacher Joey named her business DoughMestic PH due to the fact that it is a work from home. More importantly it is an ode to all moms who tirelessly and lovingly do what they do for their families.
DoughMestic PH is homemade which means means she can control the quality of her cakes. Customers get the same quality that she serves to her family.
Her botanicakes are preservative-free. According to her, this is something that she makes sure her family gets and nothing less. She also uses premium and freshest ingredients---tasteful, flavorful and sweetened with just the right touch, that's why she wants them made-to-order. She doesn't like to sell cakes that have been lying around for days.
"Kasi bunso ako sa family so I'm used to being taken cared of, and now that I am a mom myself, now ko
lang fully na-grasp 'yon and naiisip ko ang mom ko how she raised us and
managed her own business din. But retired na pala siya. Anyway, all moms go through struggles everyday for their families too. So I have great respect for all moms in that regard. Motherhood is like the ultimate job of a lifetime. Pero super rewarding as in!"
