October 22, 2020I was raised by a mom who takes dressing up seriously. She would always tell me that dressing for the occasion decently was essential because it was a form of self-respect and respect towards others. She said that doing these should not cost me an arm and leg. I should learn how to choose a few basic or classic pieces that I could mix and match. I should also not be into trends. She would reiterate that I should not sacrifice comfort or wear something that would not speak of my personality because by not doing so, I would just make a fool out of myself.

Your clothes and shoes will make or break you so make the right choices," she would say. Yes, indeed. It's true. She was frugal in choosing the right clothing and shoes but she would never sacrifice quality and comfort. She wasn't into expensive and branded clothing. She was very particular in supporting locally-made outfits: elegant, classic, durable, presentable, and most especially, affordable. She would say that buying local would support our Philippine-owned businesses and that would be good for our economy.
In consonance, I also heard my uncle once said to everyone, "The best-footed man is a well-dressed man." He would usually wear simple clothes during meetings or special occasions but his pair of shoes were exceptionally uncommon or unique. His shoes made his total look extraordinary. He would brag that they were Philippine-made, gawang-Marikina.
Growing up in a family who treats choosing the right outfit a serious matter is an advantage. Never in my more than four decades of existence had a bad experience when it comes to choosing the right clothes especially pairs of shoes that would not cause any discomfort or uneasiness when I go out and face the world. Yes, the right outfit which includes the perfect pair of shoes could make me rule the world!
